Knob cutters can be used for branch removal on bonsai trees that have a thick callus. The knob cutter will create a concave cut into the trunk which leaves room for the callus to heal into giving you a flush cut once the wound heals. To use the knob cutters first cut the branch with your branch cutters leaving a small knob, then you can finish the cut with the knob cutters, if you leave the full length of the branch on your wont be able to apply the knob cutters perfectly straight. Knob cutters are also very handy for working down flat cuts or stumps to create a more natural transition.
No, Knob cutters are specially designed to leave a concave cut which serves a purpose. The elongated handles also make this work easier as you have extra strength when trying to cut through tough wood.
Bonsai trees come in different sizes so having the correct size knob cutter is important. The larger the tree and harder the wood the larger of a knob cutter you will need, but if you only have smaller trees then a smaller knob cutter will suffice and will be easier to work with.
Carbon Steel is a stronger steel then stainless steel. Most jobs that we use knob cutters for are high stress jobs which require reliability. Carbon steel is less likely to break or become dull. Japanese tool makers only make the larger size knob cutters in carbon steel for this reason as any that job that requires a tool that large will require a lot of force which stainless just wont hold up too at that size. We do have stainless versions available in 205mm our special orders section but we will always recommend carbon steel.
