The most common questions in Bonsai, How much do they cost?

One of the most common questions people have about bonsai trees is how much they cost. It's not surprising, really - bonsai trees are living works of art that require a lot of care and attention, and the cost can vary depending on a number of factors. If you're curious about how much a bonsai tree might set you back, keep reading! There is a lot than can vary the price so knowing each step of the process can help you decide if the price is too high or if you are getting a bargin!

Size: How the size of a bonsai tree affects its price

When it comes to bonsai trees, size definitely matters - and it can have a big impact on the price! Bonsai trees come in a wide range of sizes, from tiny little trees that can fit in the palm of your hand to larger specimens that can be several feet tall. Generally speaking, the larger the bonsai tree, the more expensive it will be. This is because larger trees require more care and attention, and they also take longer to grow and train. However, smaller bonsai trees can still be quite pricey if they are rare or difficult to care for. So if you're thinking about getting a bonsai tree, be prepared to pay more for a larger specimen, but also keep in mind that smaller trees can be just as valuable in their own way!
Something to keep in mind though is that even though a larger tree can bring a bigger price this shouldn’t always be the case just because the tree is large, for example you can have a large tree that has just been collected but has no structural branching or actual bonsai training. This could be a collected piece of material or something that has been pulled form someone’s garden. Even the 2 of those will have different costs as the tree from the garden wouldn’t take much work to dig, where as a collected tree will bring a larger price as the collector has to go out into the wild and dig the tree and carry it back and make sure it survives. Its still important to take on some of the other factors that we will discuss including the training the tree has had and the other factors that affect the price. So lets continue on.

Age: How older bonsai trees are often more expensive

Just like with many other things, age can also play a big role in the price of a bonsai tree. In fact, older bonsai trees are often much more expensive than younger ones! This is because older trees have had more time to grow and develop, and they may have more intricate root systems and more interesting bark and foliage. Additionally, older bonsai trees can be more difficult to care for, as they may require more specialized techniques and equipment. Because of this, bonsai enthusiasts are often willing to pay a premium for older, more established trees. However, this doesn't mean that younger bonsai trees aren't valuable - they can still be beautiful and unique in their own way, and they are often more affordable for those who are just starting out with bonsai. Much like size though its not good enough for a tree to just be old, you can have old material that is full of flaws that are hard to fix and you wont be able to make good quality bonsai from the material. Making sure the older trees have also had the work done to them over the years to maintain shape and avoid pitfalls is important when considering price.

Species: How different species of bonsai trees have different prices.

Did you know that the species of a bonsai tree can also have a big impact on its price? That's right - some species of bonsai trees are much more expensive than others! This is because certain species are more rare or difficult to grow and care for, and may require more specialized knowledge and equipment. For example, some of the most expensive bonsai trees are varieties like the Japanese white pine or the Japanese black pine, which can be quite rare and difficult to cultivate. On the other hand, more common species like the Chinese elm or the ficus tend to be much more affordable. So if you're thinking about getting a bonsai tree, it's important to consider not just the size and age, but also the species, to help you find one that fits your budget. Another thing that can make certain species more expensive is trends, in Japan certain species come in and out of popularity and while a species is popular and in demand it is more expensive, just a few short years later that same species can begin to get cheaper as another species begins to become popular and take the spotlight.

Training: How bonsai trees that have been carefully trained and shaped are more expensive.

Have you ever seen a bonsai tree that looks like a miniature version of an ancient, gnarled oak tree or a delicate weeping willow? These intricate shapes and styles don't happen by accident - they are the result of careful training and shaping over many years. And as you might expect, bonsai trees that have been meticulously trained and shaped can be much more expensive than those that haven't. This is because the process of training a bonsai tree can be very time-consuming and requires a lot of skill and patience. In some cases, a trained bonsai tree can take decades to reach its full potential! Additionally, the more intricate and detailed the design, the higher the price tag is likely to be. So if you're looking for a truly unique and special bonsai tree, be prepared to pay a premium for one that has been expertly trained and shaped. Although most costs cant be fully recovered it is good to keep in mind what costs might have gone into a fully refined bonsai over the years. Things like Bonsai wire, cut pastes, fertilizer, water and growing medium all cost money and are a requirement to train good bonsai.

Heritage: How a tree that is tied to a family name or an artist can be more expensive

There are a few gardens in Japan that can easily bring a premium just because of the family name. Owning a tree from a well known artist can be almost like owning a part of bonsai history which can increase the price massively. Most of these gardens have earned prestigious awards with their trees as well which can also add to the value of a tree. Being able to say that a tree has won a popular bonsai show and the awards and recognition that comes along with it only make the bonsai more valuable.

The Bonsai Pot: How a bonsai pot can increase or reduce the cost of a bonsai tree

Much like we just spoke about with heritage a bonsai pot can have the power to affect the price as well, There are cheap manufacturers that can pump the pots out by the thousands in a cheap manner. What you end up with though is cheap pots. But on the other hand there are well known bonsai pot makers through out the world in which their work is sought after on its own. Having a tree in a well known makers pot can be the perfect combination for a higher price. But it is also important that the pot actually compliments the tree as well because after all Bonsai is a composition between pot and tree, The pot can either make or break the design of any tree.

How the prices of bonsai trees can vary widely depending on the factors mentioned above

As you can see, there are many factors that can influence the price of a bonsai tree! From the size and age to the species and level of training, there are many different things to consider when it comes to pricing a bonsai. Because of this, the prices of bonsai trees can vary widely, from just a few dollars for a small, common variety to tens of thousands of dollars for a rare, large, and intricately trained specimen. So whether you're looking to add a bonsai tree to your collection or just curious about their prices, it's important to keep in mind that there is a lot of variety out there and a wide range of price points to choose from.

Some general price ranges for different sizes and types of bonsai trees.

While the price of a bonsai tree can vary widely depending on the factors we've discussed, it can be helpful to have some general price ranges in mind. Here are some approximate price ranges you might expect to see for different sizes and types of bonsai trees:
  • Small bonsai trees: $10-$50 These are usually what we call gift trees and are normally just young cuttings that have been put in a cheaper production bonsai pot that has had minimal training. These trees are great for gifts or to get people off and running with their first bonsai so they can have some practise caring for their new bonsai tree.
  • Medium bonsai trees: $50-$200 These trees can range from slightly older trees then just cuttings that may or may not have some training, the more training the closer to the higher end the tree will be. Some of the trees can start to be planted in higher quality pots as well which can also see the price rise.
  • Large bonsai trees: $200-$1,000 or more These are normally your higher trained tree, there will be a good amount of structural work done and some nice branching, taper and a decent nebari ( root base ). These trees should also be planted in nicer pots to help complete the composition. Trees that start to reach the $10,000 mark or more are normally collected trees that have had years and years of work or are trees that have been grown from young material for a long time and trained as such.
Keep in mind that these are just rough estimates, and prices can vary widely depending on the specific tree and the factors we've discussed. Additionally, some rare or highly prized species of bonsai trees can cost significantly more than these price ranges suggest. If you're looking to buy a bonsai tree, it's a good idea to do your research and shop around to find the best deal on a tree that fits your needs and budget.

How some bonsai trees can be very expensive, with prices in the thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars and more.

If you put together all the things we spoke about before you can end up with trees that are worth more then a house in some cases. If you have a large tree, that is old ( 1000’s of years ) that is a sough after species and has had meticulous training by a professional and comes from a garden that has a name for itself and the tree has won awards and is planted in a pot from a well known maker, You are in for a bit of price shock! But in saying this you can be in for a bit of price shock even from people selling trees on facebook. So lets discuss this a bit further down below.

Where bonsai trees can be purchased

These days Bonsai Trees can be purchased from a range of places such as online bonsai shops, bonsai nursery’s, large chain retailers, pop up shops, road side stalls and from social media such as facebook. Where you buy from is going to greatly affect the quality of the tree. For example a bonsai nursery most of the time will be your best option as they specialize in growing bonsai material and understand the work that needs to be done, But buying from larger retail chains or from social media can sometimes be a case of high prices and low quality. I would always recommend asking your local bonsai club where they purchase their material from or seek out your local bonsai nursery. You can do this by searching Where to buy bonsai near me in google.

prices can vary between different sellers, and how you can make a decision if the price is right.

Like discussed above different sellers can have widely varying prices. This can be because one nursery may propagate their own material versus another nursery that buys their material from a wholesaler. This can also be a case of there is only 1 nursery that has bonsai trees in an area so they can charge more because there is no competition. But 1 nursery might just have much better material then another nursery, you can see how there are some many things that can affect pricing. Sometimes there’s good reason other times its just greed. But being armed with the knowledge to understand pricing is your most powerful tool and you might even be able to use some of this knowledge to talk the price down if it is truly too high. Remember on more expensive trees they might be expensive for good reason so try to choose who you talk down. From my experience trees for sale on social media seem to be the most over prices for the least quality, This is usually because they are not a business so they purchase all the supplies at retail cost ( whats its actually worth ) then put it all together and mark the price up further. These people for the most part are also just trying to make a quick dollar so the work is usually poor quality and minimal at most. BUT there can be some gems that pop up so keep your eyes out. Once again by using this knowledge we have supplied you with you can make your own judgements on if the price advertised is what the tree is actually worth.
